If you’re new to embroidery you may be wondering which supplies to get. Well, you obviously need a needle, floss, fabric, and a hoop. But, what kinds? What types? Where to get them? I’ve gathered some of my favorites and have then listed below.
I’m pretty particular about fabrics and hoops, so the below are my absolute favorite suppliers! I hope this helps take some of the guesswork out of what to purchase to get started with embroidery.
Must-Have Hand Embroidery Supplies
Thread snips – also known as embroidery scissors. These are smaller, easier to work with, and super efficient. I’m going to do a whole post on some of my favorites, but for now, let’s look at a couple I personally like.

I generally work with 8 inch, 6 inch, and 4 inch hoops.
These are a step up from your traditional embroidery hoops. They’re great for framing your special piece. They’re more expensive but if you have a special piece you want to frame nicely, they’re a great option. The below is one of my pieces framed in it – please note, I did finish it with brown paint and some sanding.
I love this fabric! It’s a beautiful linen and cotton blend.
You want lots of fabric options, colors, and textures? This is your place. I buy from this shop when I want colors and buy from fabricdivas (above) when I want white or linen colors.
She has her DMC floss sorted so nicely. If you can’t get to a craft store locally, I recommend her shop.
